Bio-surgery

Bio-surgery is the practice of using biological replacement materials (bio-materials) rather than synthetic materials in surgery to reconstruct or seal tissues within the body.

Bio-surgery products are used in procedures like hernia repair, plastic reconstructive surgery, closure of holes in the heart, support for neural tissue, as well as orthopedic applications such as tendon and ligament repair.

Natural bio-materials are a fast emerging trend in surgery due to their bio-compatibility, as well as their ability to integrate and remodel with the patient's own tissue.

The purpose of a bio-material is to provide a temporary support system or scaffolding which allows cells from the surrounding body tissues to migrate in and start producing new tissue. Eventually, the temporary bio-material scaffolding is replaced.

Natural bio-materials are used in applications ranging from urology to neurosurgery to orthopedics.

In some cases, long-term persistence of a bio-material is required, while in other cases, a durable but remodelable material which allows host infiltration is needed.

Currently available bio-materials such as synthetic mesh grafts, cadaveric tissue grafts, animal-derived tissue grafts, and autologous tissue grafts (harvested from the patient's own tissue), have deficiencies that can present challenges to the surgeon and possibly compromise patient recovery.

Analyzing the needs, as well as the advantages and deficiencies in current technology, Organogenesis has developed multiple products to be used in surgical applications.

FortaFlex®

FortaFlex® is a line of natural biomaterials, and is the foundation for an entire family of FDA-cleared products. By controlling the chemical and physical properties of the material, FortaFlex® technology can be tailored for specific surgical needs.

The products in our bio-surgery portfolio include CuffPatch™, for orthopedics, FortaPerm® for urology, uro-gynecology, and plastic surgeries, FortaGen® for hernia repair, uro-gynecology, orthopedic, plastic, colorectal, and oto-laryngological surgeries.

FortaPerm® and FortaGen® are all registered trademarks of Organogenesis. CuffPatch™ is a trademark of Biomet, Inc.

Of these products, FortaPerm® and FortaGen® are available for licensing for various indications to corporate partners. In these fields, the opportunities are estimated to surpass $1 billion.

FortaFlex® is Unique

Organogenesis has based its proprietary FortaFlex® technology on the premise that the ability to create natural bio-materials optimized for strength and in situ tissue interaction needed for specific surgical applications is a major advance.

FortaFlex® is unique in that it is:

Strong: Highest strength per unit thickness in class

Pure: Purest material in class due to proprietary purification process

Customized: Customized remodeling through innovative cross-linking technology

Ready to Use: Delivered hydrated.

The Future of Bio-surgery

To date the bio-materials used for bio-surgery have been acellular (non-living). These provide a "passive" healing environment. While acellular products provide strength and support, cellular bio-materials also actively stimulate tissue regeneration and healing.

Organogenesis is currently developing future generation bio-materials which will also incorporate living cells for active healing.
